Hey Amanda [McPherson], the C in Comments in Not Censorship (Corrected)

Posted in GNU/Linux, Kernel, OSDL at 11:14 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

[Correction: as indicated at the bottom, there may have been an accident here and no censorship was involved. Below is the original post.]

Linux Foundation, open up already

I don’t mean to start another unnecessary argument with the Linux Foundation (there is more than one in the past), but having advised the Foundation not to start an argument with Sun Microsystems I also posted the following polite comment:

Hi Amanda,

As someone who advocates Linux passionately, I’d advise against provoking a war of words again Sun. Other companies will use it against us.

Take care, I’m subscribed to this blog now.

A day went by. Many new comments showed up, but mine did not. I’ve just had to post another test comment to confirm that moderation is applied to everything. Therefore, that comment of mine (quoted above in full) was discarded, rejected. What is that all about?

    offtopic but consider please:

What happened to Microsoft working on interoperability?

Where has Microsoft improved Linux & Windows working together since their actions with Corel many years ago when Corel still worked on WINE, the dumping of Corel Linux only to become Xandros and the patent agreement signed with Microsoft and the EEE Pc (extend, embrace, extinguish?) with Xandros?

    In the year 2000:

Interview: Corel’s Linux VP on the Microsoft deal

LinuxWorld: Will you continue to work with and support the Wine project, and will you continue to use Wine to bring your traditionally Windows applications to Linux?

Rene Schmidt: Yeah, currently we have WordPerfect and CorelDraw, we’ve done those two main suites. Where we are right now is that those are two main investments at this point, and what we are doing is we are looking at the desktop market on Linux and trying to expand it as well.

It will be based really on customer demand; that is what is going to drive us in terms of what we do next on applications for Linux. In terms of Wine itself, we still support it; we have been working with the community to come up with a 1.0 version of Wine and we are hoping that that is going to allow a lot of other ISVs to move their applications more rapidly over to Linux.”

Rene Schmidt: Essentially, with Linux, we are very committed to it. And the agreement, or partnership, or alliance, whatever you want to call it, with Microsoft is not anti-Linux or anything. It is really about .Net.”

Very committed you say? Microsoft not anti-Linux? What happened to all the work on Wine and 1.0? All those Corel apps on Linux? Visit Corel’s site now and you see nothing of the sort, but you do see Microsoft related content, banners, and stuff about Vista. Alliance, indeed.

Why can’t we use DirectX from Microsoft on Linux completely without problems and without using WINE, Cedega or some other alternative?

Google “They said it couldn’t be done” regarding Novell and Microsoft.

It can be done, Microsoft, but apparently not by you. Thank you to the wine developers and companies like Google who are doing something positive for interoperability.

Offtopic but on the subject of Microsoft’s continued monopoly and power connections:
    http://www.boingboing.net/2008/02/20/library-of-congress-1.html
“Library of Congress sells itself out to Microsoft for a mere $3 mil”

“This deal involves the donation of “technology, services and funding” (e.g., mostly not money) with a purported value of $3m from Microsoft to the Library of Congress. The Library, in turn, agrees to put kiosks running Vista in the library and to use Microsoft Silverlight to “help power the library’s new Web site, http://www.myloc.gov.”
The official blogger of the library, Matt Raymond, says “this is really a quantum leap for the library.” Perhaps it is, but it sure smells like a whole lot of proprietary.”

    Silverlight and DirectX in a tree, k i s s i n g

some things never change, why isn’t the US gov keeping Microsoft away, why these agreements? how deep does their power go? how can microsoft ever be stopped? how long until Microsoft owns America and Gates is in Government? This is scary and people are mostly too asleep to care, cuddling their xbox and unconcerned, unaware.

    Are we afraid ?

    WTF ! Pleasssse !!!!!!

Why is we should declare peace with M$. This is a all out WAR againt every closed source, proprietary-software monopoly. We wont rest until we have our rights. Freedom is our birth right. And we are ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED to have it.

No longer these assholes can treat us like some third grade low level consumers. WTF is this with CD-Key, DRM, Activation, Trialware crap – treating us we are some sort of thevies or criminals.

We pay for the software and we have FULL rights to the source code and we should be free to make any modifications we want to it to suite our requirements.

    To quote ESR.

“On the day *I* go to work for Microsoft, faint oinking sounds will be heard from far overhead, the moon will not merely turn blue but develop polkadots, and hell will freeze over so solid the brimstone will go superconductive.

But I must thank you for dropping a good joke on my afternoon. On that hopefully not too far distant day that I piss on Microsoft’s grave, I sincerely hope none of it will splash on you.”

you = Novell and other M$ allies.

Thank you for fucking us gnome users Novell with your mono crap.

Ironically, ESR later joined Linspire, but he escaped quietly after Linspire had made friends with Ballmer and the patent fear mongering band (Hilf et al).

I hope all the M$ and Novell employees die in a fire and then burn eternally in hell. That’s what every last one of them deserves.

I bet they are all laughing at how they are successfully poisoning Linux with their shite code and how they are tricking so many blind and dumb users and distributions into helping them.

    It makes me sick.

Shame on Red Hat and Canonical for being lambs to the slaughter.

Microsoft and Novell are where the REAL terrorists are.

I wouldn’t go that far, Mark. I am, however, aware of misconduct in both companies. Comparing that to physical things is quite a stretch though. I’ll mail Mark Shuttleworth and Fedora’s new project leader and draw their attention just in case. The new guy at Fedora I never spoke to before.

I’m just so frustrated with M$ and Novell because every day I see more and more free software get contaminated and these developers don’t even understand why using MONO is so wrong. I just don’t get it, how can they be so blind?

On the subject of Mono in Ubuntu and Fedora, I have just E-mailed Paul and Mark.

I wish to draw your attention to the issue which is Mono dependencies in your distributions. As you may be aware by now, software patent issues are being gradually introduced and I have a detailed analysis of Ubuntu here ( http://boycottnovell.com/2008/02/15/mono-contamination-in-ubuntu/ ) with a similar one of Fedora on its way. This is something that we must not turn a blind eye to. Many people have begun to realise this and I fear that action will not be taken until it is too late.

They will hopefully respond. With Novell I never speak. Never tried, either.

    Hi Roy,
My apologies. I’ve gotten a bunch of spam comments (as well as legit but inappropriate comments). Yours is obviously neither so I’ll find it and approve it. I’ve missed a few with so many of them and the Microsoft announcement today.
    It should be up shortly.

Actually I see I had already approved your comment during a bunch I did last night/this morning. It’s been up there.

Thanks, Amanda. Sorry if I jumped the gun. I’ll correct the post.

Again, thanks for the work you do. I began reading that blog a couple of days ago.
