oiaohm Than to have to do the converions between windows to linux or the other way. Feb 20 16:38
twitter The result of the “upgrade” a new version of a browser and a few other minor tweaks. Feb 20 16:38
twitter It was a huge waste of money. Feb 20 16:39
oiaohm Mac to Linux almost painless. Feb 20 16:39
oiaohm Either way. Feb 20 16:39
twitter GNU/Linux saves that kind of money on a continual basis. Feb 20 16:39
oiaohm Its getting accross the divide in one piece. Feb 20 16:39
oiaohm At least with time that is getting simpler. Feb 20 16:40
oiaohm 2001 is was a real prick. Feb 20 16:40
schestowitz That’s why talking points are spread Feb 20 16:40
schestowitz To counter reality Feb 20 16:40
schestowitz I need to do some more posts today Feb 20 16:40
schestowitz Just one so far :-( Feb 20 16:40
twitter Young Franken Steve, very funny. Feb 20 16:43
schestowitz http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/feb… (Mills gets jail term in Berlusconi bribe case) Feb 20 16:43
schestowitz “Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister, defended her estranged husband, David Mills, yesterday as he was sentenced to four and a half years in an Italian jail for taking a $600,000 (£400,000) bribe as a reward for withholding court testimony to help Italy’s prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi.” Feb 20 16:43
schestowitz Meanwhile, it seems like Israel too gets a criminal in charge.. old bribery accusations too.. and a militant slant. Feb 20 16:43
schestowitz Obama will hopefully do better Feb 20 16:44
twitter You have been busy, Roy.  I’m always surprised by how much you manage to find worth posting. Feb 20 16:44
schestowitz Then there’s SARKO… and Gordon ain’t good either. Feb 20 16:44
schestowitz I’m actually growing fond of independence fighters like Chavez Feb 20 16:44
schestowitz He is popular among the population and the US calls him “a tyrant” because he’s not allowing the US to colonialise Venezuela Feb 20 16:44
schestowitz twitter: thanks. Feb 20 16:45
schestowitz http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/feb… “MI5 provided the CIA with material to interrogate Binyam Mohamed, the former UK resident at the centre of torture allegations, even though it had no idea where he was being held and in what condition he was in, it emerged yesterday.” Feb 20 16:46
oiaohm http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/op…  Who would have dreamed of a compare like this 5 years ago. Feb 20 16:47
schestowitz Yeah… real product vs vapourware Feb 20 16:52
oiaohm No Linux being the real product Feb 20 16:52
oiaohm Its role reversed. Feb 20 16:52

oiaohm http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/20…  Hmm we are starting to move into secound wave Feb 20 17:03
twitter Actually, oiahom, I thought GNU/Linux was ready for prime time eight years ago. Feb 20 17:04
oiaohm Linux massive processor support.  So different cpu types start appearing in frount of users. Feb 20 17:04
oiaohm I have been using Linux since 1995 twitter .   About 8 years ago it show prommise but hardware support was a major bug bear. Feb 20 17:05
oiaohm Now the move between showing promise to functional has taken a while. Feb 20 17:05
oiaohm The evolution not working well on windows in 2002 was a major stumbling block for making move accross simple. Feb 20 17:07

schestowitz http://kmandla.wordpress.com/20… Feb 20 17:10
twitter I’ve been able to use GNU/Linux exclusively for the last 8 years.  Hardware support has always been hard everywhere, but GNU/Linux is now much better than Windows. Feb 20 17:12
twitter Distributions like Knoppix had superior hardware support from the start. Feb 20 17:13
oiaohm I started off where hardware support was have a shoping list. Feb 20 17:14
oiaohm If you did not have the right parts it did not work. Feb 20 17:14
oiaohm At the improvement rates of Linux I don’t have a clue what it will look like in 2019 Feb 20 17:14
twitter There is still sabotage like that, but GNU/Linux now runs more hardware than any other OS ever. Feb 20 17:15
oiaohm Not ever Feb 20 17:15
oiaohm Beating dos took ages. Feb 20 17:15
twitter What kernel has better hardware support than Linux? Feb 20 17:16
schestowitz There’s some Linux usage FUD out there. Feb 20 17:16
schestowitz I’m tryint to rebut it all Feb 20 17:16
schestowitz I think it all began with that SJVN article (which quotes BN  too). Feb 20 17:16
schestowitz On our site (boycottnovell) which does almost 1 million pageviews a month (I dunno about Coral cache), over 30% use GNU/Linux (based on AWStats). Feb 20 17:17
twitter The usual lie is that fewer than 1% of users have GNU/Linux.  Only 30%?  wow. Feb 20 17:17
schestowitz People must not measure usage based on the ‘average’ users’ site and assume this to be representative of the average. It’s a terminal mistake to make. Geographies matter A LOT too.  Linux usage in Brazil and Russian, for example, is massive. It tends to land on sites that don’t speak English. Feb 20 17:17

schestowitz twitter: more like 35% Feb 20 17:17
oiaohm Depends where you are on the earth surface. Feb 20 17:18
twitter When does it peak? Feb 20 17:18
oiaohm Australia is about 0.1 % use Linux. Feb 20 17:18
oiaohm Thinking that Australia has the highest usage of Microsoft products out of any country. Feb 20 17:18
twitter Not even the M$ campus has GNU/Linux desktop use that low, oiaohm. Feb 20 17:19
oiaohm We have UNI’s here that are pure MS. Feb 20 17:19
twitter Ahhhh, now I know where Balmer gets his statistics … Feb 20 17:19
twitter He samples the M$ campus and fudges it the way he likes. Feb 20 17:20
oiaohm Small business here runs basically 100 percent on Microsoft. Feb 20 17:20
oiaohm Larger business here most use Linux as price dropping talk. Feb 20 17:21
oiaohm Cracks are starting to appear. Feb 20 17:21
schestowitz OpenSUSE is having problems Feb 20 17:21
schestowitz Ya benJIman. Feb 20 17:21
schestowitz http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2… http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/02/… Feb 20 17:21
oiaohm It also might explain why we don’t see eye to eye twitter.  I am in a far more free/open source not tollerent market.  Lot here still believe the myth because its open source it has to be a secuirty risk. Feb 20 17:22

twitter http://www.myspace.com/benjimanactivate Feb 20 17:23
twitter The things I see and think, oiaohm, don’t depend on what Windows users see or think. Feb 20 17:24
oiaohm I have even one at the moment taking a closed source china made office clone over Open Office. Feb 20 17:25
twitter that would be baaaaa-aaa-aaa-d. Feb 20 17:25
twitter *thinking like a windows user, not an OO clone. Feb 20 17:25
schestowitz http://makuro.wordpress.com/2009/0… Feb 20 17:25
schestowitz Sabayon is rising in Cuba Feb 20 17:26
schestowitz Gentoo also had some other success stories recently, but there are those places for drama in blogs Feb 20 17:26
oiaohm Basically this market is resistant twitter.   So I need things to work close to perfectly. Feb 20 17:26
twitter http://images.google.com/images?q=ben… Feb 20 17:26
oiaohm So they don’t find a reason to bail out. Feb 20 17:26
oiaohm Yes here they do.   MS is easy is another nice myth here. Feb 20 17:27
twitter You find reasons for people to bail out.  Users suffer. Feb 20 17:27
schestowitz Not the same one… http://flickr.com/photos/49814197… Feb 20 17:27
oiaohm Not the same twitter my reasons I state users have come to me and it was there reason for leaving it. Feb 20 17:28
schestowitz oiaohm: worry not Feb 20 17:28
oiaohm Getting them to go back after that is hard work. Feb 20 17:28
schestowitz AU is like the UK in a sense Feb 20 17:28
schestowitz Very close to English speaking neighbours Feb 20 17:28

schestowitz So there is the whole MS collusion relationship Feb 20 17:28
schestowitz Here it is common for Microsoft to run the government and for the Big Criminals from US-based multinationals to be family friends of leaders. Feb 20 17:29
oiaohm Different markets different problems. Feb 20 17:29
twitter People who value their freedom don’t use Windows. Feb 20 17:29
schestowitz So adoption of FOSS is abysmal consider to the remainder of the world Feb 20 17:29
schestowitz Almost an oder of magnitude worse Feb 20 17:29
oiaohm Problem here no such thing on the freedom side twitter where. Feb 20 17:29
oiaohm where/here Feb 20 17:29
oiaohm Also lot of people here also believe Microsoft is good. Feb 20 17:29
schestowitz In Germany, almost half of sub-notebooks are sold with Linux and about 6% of laptops (maybe desktops too). Feb 20 17:29
twitter the freedom issue is everywhere, people who use Windows simply don’t understand it. Feb 20 17:30
oiaohm The issue here they want the freedom to do there business. Feb 20 17:30
schestowitz A lof of people also believe that Rockefeller and Rothschild were good. They bought PR.. Feb 20 17:30
oiaohm They believe Microsoft gives them that freedom. Feb 20 17:30
schestowitz They don’t understand freedom Feb 20 17:31
schestowitz Because they are privileged Feb 20 17:31
oiaohm Yes you and I might to agree with them on that its getting past the mind set. Feb 20 17:31
oiaohm They buy a truck to move stuff. Feb 20 17:31
oiaohm They buy windows to run a computer. Feb 20 17:31
schestowitz As long as it’s Colobian farmers who are attacked by acid and Nigerian kids who suffocate from oil, they have their freedom (to suppress) Feb 20 17:31
oiaohm And it goes on. Feb 20 17:31
schestowitz But that it very problematic at another scale Feb 20 17:31
schestowitz You could go on pretending that imperialisation like Microsoft is OK at a national level too. Feb 20 17:32
oiaohm Australian tax office don’t provide tax return software for Linux. Feb 20 17:32
schestowitz That sabotaging competiiton (other countries) for submission is acceptable. Feb 20 17:32
oiaohm Or business interfaces software for Linux. Feb 20 17:33
oiaohm So yep all levels. Feb 20 17:33
schestowitz The French (And even the UK and Nazi Germany) always had reasons to justify it for themselves Feb 20 17:33
schestowitz Microsoft is the same Feb 20 17:33
schestowitz They think they do the world a favour with Windows Feb 20 17:33
schestowitz Gates extorts politicians saying that OOXML is good for the family Feb 20 17:33
schestowitz The IBM execs were deeply disgusted by this. Feb 20 17:33
oiaohm OOXML was votied down here. Feb 20 17:33
oiaohm National archives have common sence. Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz Perfect plot: commit crime, rename it a “duty” Feb 20 17:34
oiaohm this is where it gets stupid. Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz oiaohm: it wasn;t Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz AU abstained Feb 20 17:34
oiaohm National archives of Australia are stored in ODF. Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz It had shill like Ricj Jelliffe Feb 20 17:34
twitter Good for Au. Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz On Microsoft’s sheckel Feb 20 17:34
schestowitz Get paid by Microsoft, give ‘opinion’; Feb 20 17:34
twitter Businesses change their practices when users complain that their M$ crap does not work well.  That’s how it is happening here in the US. Feb 20 17:35
twitter Small banks, dealerships and others don’t dare put something up that’s M$ only anymore. Feb 20 17:35
twitter Mac and GNU/Linux users get turned off and leave. Feb 20 17:36
twitter Even big dumb companies are starting to get it. Feb 20 17:36
schestowitz “Update 20Feb09: I installed Easy Peasy which is a Ubuntu remix for the ASUS Eee PCs and I love it. It works great out-of-the-box! I am glad to be rid of that Xandros nightmare.” http://blog.hydrasystemsllc.com/2009/02/… Feb 20 17:36
oiaohm You are a few stages ahead of here twitter Feb 20 17:36
oiaohm I am still battling with how to get it into there minds clearly. Feb 20 17:37
twitter When people understand freedom, they don’t blame GNU/Linux when things don’t work, they blame M$ and other idiot businesses for the things they do. Feb 20 17:37
oiaohm So they are really sentivitive to any set backs. Feb 20 17:37
oiaohm Its one of theses things you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. Feb 20 17:38
twitter You have to complain when online services you use don’t work.  Polite, factual complaints work. Feb 20 17:38
oiaohm Ie you have to get the interested. Feb 20 17:38
oiaohm Most banks here support firefox. Feb 20 17:38
oiaohm They go as far as rejecting users running IE. Feb 20 17:38
oiaohm But that is purely on security grounds of course. Feb 20 17:39
twitter M$ OS are a real pain in the ass to keep working.  There’s nothing more interesting to practical people than an OS that does not need all that. Feb 20 17:39
oiaohm Not there like of open source and freedom. Feb 20 17:39
oiaohm Once I have users on Linux and use to it they don’t go back. Feb 20 17:40
twitter People who understand freedom are willing to put up with a few problems to preserve their rights. Feb 20 17:40
oiaohm Its getting them accross without them jump back and the first problem. Feb 20 17:40
oiaohm Even if they understand freedom some here say they have the freedom to used closed if they want to. Feb 20 17:40

twitter ” Foreigners face severe difficulties when they are fired because their visas are tied to their employer, said Paul Soreff, a Seattle lawyer and former chairman of the Washington Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. amd-linux the financial crisis is giving FOSS adoption a real boost me thinks? Feb 20 20:10
schestowitz amd-linux: definitely Feb 20 20:10
schestowitz I read something earlier about, well… Feb 20 20:11

schestowitz It hurts Apple (AppleWorld dies, no new products this year) and it hurts Microsoft more Feb 20 20:12
schestowitz It’s all relative but with all in “brace” mode, the clumsy ones can’t advance… Debian did well with 5.0 Feb 20 20:13

amd-linux MS is too big, to important – imagine the investments of many pension funds in MS Feb 20 20:27
schestowitz Ballmer is actually good for Microsoft Feb 20 20:27
amd-linux that alone will prevent that the US let them die Feb 20 20:27
MinceR then the US will have to die too Feb 20 20:28
amd-linux why is he good? he is running them into the ground, everybody can see this? Feb 20 20:28
schestowitz An academic friend of mine has watched this industry for decade and he theorises that Gates stepped down after Microsoft had lost $18bn in 1998. He left Ballmer to just squeeze any penny that’s left in the pyramid scheme Feb 20 20:28
schestowitz So Ballmer cared only about quick profits, nothing else. Feb 20 20:28
amd-linux he is a fanatic, but on the dark side – he is maybe too proud to admit that he is wrong, dead wrong Feb 20 20:28
MinceR what’s running them into the ground is that they haven’t ever come up with a single usable product during their existence Feb 20 20:29

schestowitz Search BN for it… I wrote a lot about it with the details. They even hire the anti-Linux henchman, Al Gillen Feb 20 23:34
schestowitz IDC is about the manufacturing of ‘adverts’ to clients, custom-tailored based on needs Feb 20 23:36

oiaohm Its not like php is a poor releation.   It the most dominate web platform. Feb 20 23:51
Balrog yeah, SL sucks. Feb 20 23:52
oiaohm Also php does not suffer from Windows updates to .net stuffing up browser compadiblity. Feb 20 23:52
Balrog doesn’t even do x-platform a lot Feb 20 23:52
oiaohm Secound life internally does not run .net Feb 20 23:53
oiaohm Only the clone of it does. Feb 20 23:53
Balrog well, unfortunately, it sucks to rewrite all that .net code into PHP or one of the alternatives Feb 20 23:53
oiaohm So days of asp2php is needed again. Feb 20 23:53
oiaohm Major reason why hosters like php over .net is they can audit it themself simply. Feb 20 23:54
Balrog yeah. Someone I know said …. Feb 20 23:55
Balrog “again, try code maintenance with .net first….. its a developer’s dream man” Feb 20 23:55
oiaohm Audit Feb 20 23:55
oiaohm Not code maintenance. Feb 20 23:55
Balrog and “try web development in both php and http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://asp.net and then get back to me on what’s easier or better for interoperability” Feb 20 23:56
Balrog it was a facebook convo so don’t worry about that link Feb 20 23:56
Balrog in any case, the better sites I see use php or some other open platform Feb 20 23:56
schestowitz *LOL* “Subject: my letter to suse community [...] Dear Suse Community, Feb 20 23:56
schestowitz Please get out of there as soon as possible. Feb 20 23:56

schestowitz Here is the LunuxHaters post, “Just let it die, please” < http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2009/02/ju… > Feb 20 23:57
oiaohm I am back on PHP becuase its simpler. Feb 20 23:58
Balrog oiaohm: is asp.net better for interoperability or easier Feb 20 23:58
oiaohm Ammount of prebuilt code of PHP is insane. Feb 20 23:58
Balrog ? Feb 20 23:58
Balrog I don’t think so….? Feb 20 23:58
oiaohm interoperablity with what. Feb 20 23:58
oiaohm Again. Feb 20 23:58
Balrog browsers, I guess. Feb 20 23:59
oiaohm If you want interoperablity with every web browser out there. Feb 20 23:59
oiaohm You need direct control of what is sent to the browser from time to time. Feb 20 23:59
Balrog though I’d dispute that. Feb 20 23:59
oiaohm PHP provides that. Feb 20 23:59
oiaohm With out it new browser released something broken you cannot fix. Feb 20 23:59

What Else is New

  1. Now is the Time to Sign the Petition Against the Unitary Patent (UPC)

With only days left before the UPC is debated in English/British (and maybe Scottish) Parliament it's important to make public officials aware that there is resistance among those sufficiently informed

  2. Justice is Dead Not Only at the European Patent Office But Also the Whole European Patent Organisation

The whole mechanism of justice at the EPO (notably separation of powers) is more or less defunct after Battistelli asserted God-like powers not just over the Office but the entire Organisation, including the above-mentioned Boards of Appeal

  3. IAM Just Can't Stop Pushing for Software Patents in India

The shaming tactics against India, which come from many directions (notably front groups in the West), still try hard to convince Indians to shoot themselves in the foot and allow foreign companies to privatise algorithms

  4. More Hardware Companies Adopt Software Patents and Become Like Patent Trolls

A glance at the 'trollisation' of large companies that are tempted by the prospects of patent bullying, even if it's known to be damaging to one's brand and a distraction from productive activities

  5. Yes, Michelle Lee is Still in Charge of the US Patent Office, in Spite of the Patent Microcosm's Endless Attacks on Her

In spite of many attacks on Michelle Lee -- all of which courtesy of rude patent maximalists -- she remains in charge of the Office and we wish her continued success in that role

  6. Links 28/2/2017: Wine 1.8.7, AWS Goes Belly-up

    Links for the day

  7. The Boards of Appeal Openly Complain (in the EPO's Web Site) About Battistelli, But Don't Tell Battistelli About It...

The Boards of Appeal have found the courage -- in the face of a pattern of illegal retaliation -- to state that Battistelli's abuse of power compromises the perceived if not actual legitimacy of their decisions

  8. Web Site of French Senator Richard Yung Cracked Just Days After Criticising the EPO

A French politician finds himself red-faced after criticising the EPO, as his site gets flagged as malicious, gets blocked, and his blog post (speech) about the EPO vanishes

  9. New Survey Shows That Even Patent Professionals Know That Team UPC is Lying About Unitary Patent Roadmaps

The "Unified Patent Court (UPC) is unlikely to become operational by December 2017 [according to] nearly three-quarters of WIPR readers," but Team UPC continues to spread lies

  10. Does the EPO Want Patent Quality to Decline Against the USPTO and Become Akin to SIPO?

The EPO, which is trying to convert a patent system into a cash cow rather than a public service, risks losing public support and an applicants base (where it hasn't lost it already)

  11. Xinova is a Patent Troll With Connections to Microsoft and Intellectual Ventures, the World's Largest Troll

A Microsoft patent troll gives birth to another trollish tentacle (one among literally thousands), this one called "Xinova" but formerly known as Invention Development Fund (IDF)

  12. IAM 'Magazine' Rented Out to Microsoft Again, in Order to Attack Amazon (as Host of Free/Libre Software) Using Software Patents FUD

The new front against GNU/Linux, or the attempt by Microsoft to tax the platform using software patents, is glossed over in puff pieces from Microsoft, conveniently published under IAM's own umbrella again

  13. Links 27/2/2017: GNU Linux-libre 4.10, Weston 2.0.0, Git 2.12.0, Linux From Scratch 8.0

    Links for the day

  14. Top Officials in French Government Are Growing Tired of Battistelli's Abuses at the European Patent Office (EPO)

An automated translation of a recent debate about the EPO in the French government, culminating in intervention by Richard Yung

  15. A US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Which is Hostile Towards Patent Maximalists May Closely Examine More Patents That Apple Uses Against Android

A company which often takes pride in designers rather than developers (art, not technical merit) may lose that leverage over the competition if its questionable patents are taken away by the Supremes

  16. As Long as Software Patents Are Granted and Microsoft Equips Trolls With Them, “Azure IP Advantage” is an Attack on Free/Libre Software

Microsoft is feeding enemies of GNU/Linux and Free/libre Open Source software (FLOSS) in order to sell its 'protection', which it names "IP Advantage" in a rather Orwellian fashion (same naming as back in the Novell days)

  17. Patent Trolls on Their Way Out in the United States and Their Way Into China, No Thanks to the Open Invention Network (OIN)

An update on patent trolls and the role played by supposed allies of Free/libre software, who in practice do everything to exacerbate the problem rather than resolve it

  18. Insensitivity at the EPO’s Management – Part VIII: When Governed by Criminals, Truth-Tellers Are Cast as Criminals and Criminals as Justice Deliverers

The bizarre state of affairs at the European Patent Office, where being an honest and transparent person makes one incredibly vulnerable and subjected to constant harassment from the management

  19. The Sickness of the EPO – Part V: Shedding Light on Institutional Abuse Against Ill and/or Disabled Individuals

The seriousness of the situation at the EPO and a call for action, which requires greater transparency, even if imposed transparency

  20. The EPO's Race to the Bottom in Recruitment and Early Retirements Explained by an Insider

The European Patent Office under Battistelli is failing to attract -- and certainly failing to retain -- talented examiners

  21. Wouter Pors and Other UPC Boosters Believe That Repeating the Lies Will Potentially Make Them Truths

The lobbying campaign for UPC, or hopeful lies (sometimes mere rumours) disguised as "news", continues to rely on false perceptions that the UPC is just a matter of time and may actually materialise this year

  22. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) is Utilised in Fixing the US Patent System and the Patent Microcosm Loses Its Mind

A roundup of PTAB news, ranging from attacks on the legitimacy of PTAB to progress which is made by PTAB, undoing decades of overpatenting

  23. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the Federal Circuit (CAFC) Take on Patents Pertaining to Business Methods

Patents on tasks that can be performed using pen and paper (so-called 'business methods', just like algorithms) and oughtn't be patent-eligible may be the next casualty of the America Invents Act (AIA)

  24. Google's Stewardship of GNU/Linux (Android, Chromebooks and More) in Doubt After Company Resorts to Patent 'First Strikes'

Google has just turned a little more evil, by essentially using patents as a weapon against the competition (by no means a defensive move)

  25. Links 24/2/2017: Ubuntu 17.04 Beta, OpenBSD Foundation Nets $573,000 in Donations

    Links for the day

  26. IAM, Greased up by the EPO, Continues Lobbying by Shaming Tactics for the UPC, Under the Guise of 'News'

The shrill and well-paid writers of IAM are still at it, promoting the Unitary Patent (UPC) at every opportunity and every turn

  27. Patent Scope Gone Awry: European Vegetable Patents Office?

In its misguided race to raise so-called 'production', the EPO lost sight of its original goals and now facilitates patent royalty payments/taxation for naturally-recurring items of nature

  28. Yes, There is Definitely Brain Drain (Experience Deficit) at the European Patent Office and Stakeholders Feel It

The direction that the European Patent Office has taken under Battistelli undoes many decades (almost half a century) of reputation-building and progress and naturally this repels existing staff, not to mention hampers recruitment efforts

  29. The Sickness of the EPO – Part IV: Cruel Management That Deliberately Attacks the Sick and the Weak

The dysphoric reality at the European Patent Office, which is becoming like a large cell (with bolted-down windows) where people are controlled by fear and scapegoats are selected to perpetuate this atmosphere of terror and maintain demand (or workload) for the Investigative Stasi
