Novell News Summary – Part III: Novell Videos, Marketing at Twitter, and Few Minor Things
Summary: Novell’s non-SUSE news from the past week
THERE is nothing particularly important to see here this week, but here is a report anyway.
Videos
Over in YouTube, Novell has put some new technical videos. They are:

Netware
NetWare was only mentioned in very few places, such as:
Things haven’t changed much in the landscape of server operating systems (OS) in the last ten years or so—at least not as far as the available choices go. In those days it was Microsoft’s Windows NT and Novell’s NetWare 4 that were two main choices for a server OS running on commodity x86 server hardware. On the proprietary side, the options are much the same as they were 10 years ago—UNIX variants that run on hardware from Sun, HP and IBM.

Virtualisation
Novell will be offering Platespin via Dell.
Today Dell announced significant new additions to its enterprise portfolio with data center and virtualization services, new product configurations, and a new PowerEdge server and EqualLogic storage array. At the core of these announcements is a drive towards even greater performance and efficiency in the data center.

We wrote about this a week ago.
There was another case of legacy Novell systems being virtualised in India.
We have had some old (Novell) systems. Some of them were virtualized effortlessly, while in some cases, it couldn’t happen, possibly because of older environment and OS issues. Each software has its own unique constraints.
Novell tries hard to bring GroupWise to more companies.
The dedicated Novell division at local distributor, Workgroup, has announced that GroupWise licenses will be free to companies that move to a Novell collaboration environment effective immediately.
GWAVA got itself a new partnership which can help GroupWise:
Exalead announced a partnership with GWAVA, Novell’s collaboration partner. Exalead’s CloudView OEM Edition is now integrated into GWAVA’s Retain E-Mail Archiving Platform for a more customizable and lower cost solution.
Nonetheless, Novell’s Groupwise keeps losing customers. Here it is losing to its special ‘partner’, Microsoft.
He and his IT team–two network specialists and one audio visual specialist–set about replacing all of the district’s servers and PCs and putting the hardware into a five-year replacement cycle. The servers were consolidated to a central location. More recently, servers were migrated from Novell to Windows Server 2003. E-mail has been moved off of Novell GroupWise and onto Microsoft Exchange. Plus, the IT group has deployed a 3 TB storage area network (SAN).
Azaleos replaces GroupWise in a large law firm.
The care and feeding of its aging Novell Groupwise system coupled with the prospect of designing and maintaining a new Exchange Server infrastructure was taxing the resources of the company’s IT staff, which was also required to manage a separate Blackberry Enterprise Server for mobile users.
Identity Management
This may slightly out of date by now, but one publication still speaks about the Novell-SAP announcement, which is about 2 weeks old.
Novell has announced the Novell Compliance Management Platform extension for SAP environments, a cost-effective solution for managing access and security challenges across both SAP solutions and non-SAP systems, states PR-USA.net.
Security and Recovery
Like many articles about Kevin Mitnick, this latest one (original in CNET) mentions how he hacked Novell.
There is no question who the most famous hacker is. One of the first computer hackers prosecuted, Kevin Mitnick was labeled a “computer terrorist” after leading the FBI on a three-year manhunt for breaking into computer networks and stealing software at Sun Microsystems, Novell, and Motorola.
Kaspersky’s attempt to sell Windows anti-virus software for GNU/Linux is still mentioning Novell’s platforms as supported ones (SLS, OpenSUSE, OES2, and NetWare). This was covered in:
i. Linux File Server 6.0 Reaches Beta Stage
Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux File Server 6.0 supports all modern 32-bit and 64-bit distributions of Linux operating systems. These include Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE, Debian GNU, and Ubuntu. Another improvement is the added support of Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 and Novell NSS, making it easier for Novell NetWare users to migrate to the new operating system.
ii. Kaspersky releases beta Anti-Virus for Linux File Server
Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux File Server 6.0 supports all modern 32-bit and 64-bit distributions of Linux-family operating systems, including Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE, Debian GNU, and Ubuntu. Another improvement on the previous product versions is the added support of Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 and Novell NSS.
iii. Kaspersky Lab releases beta of new Linux antivirus
On prevention of data loss and Novell:
Information about people is stored and referenced using directory servers. There are plenty of these around, including IBM’s Tivoli Directory Server, Microsoft’s Active Directory and Novell’s eDirectory. While there is plenty of choice, they all largely comply with a widely accepted open standard known as LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol), so it is fairly easy for other applications to access information about users regardless of the specific directory in use.

Calix puts a former Novell manager in charge of sales and marketing.
Robert Checketts has gained extensive experience in the past 25 years with successful start-ups and companies in the technology, telecommunications, and networking industry. He joins Calix from Juniper Networks where as director of Americas marketing he supported the full range of Juniper products across all markets. In addition, Robert has held executive marketing positions at Cisco Systems, Yosemite Technologies, Lucent, Sun Microsystems, and Novell. He holds a BA in business/marketing from the University of Utah.
The following person, Steve McQuerry, is hardly tied to Novell, but his brand new profile came up with Novell certification/s.
Steve has been an active member of the internetworking community since 1991 and has held multiple certifications from Novell, Microsoft, and Cisco.

Novell was only mentioned very briefly as one which is connected to Autonomy and there is also this:
IBM also doesn’t accept just any firm as a partner — firms have to go through a software validation process to make the cut. In addition to Cisco and Honeywell, IBM says it has “validated” Novell and Thunderhead.

In fact, it’s the early roots of internet software giants like Novell’s WordPerfect that began to generate homegrown business. The thousands of trained professionals that were brought to the Valley by Novell have now tenaciously built upon their software experience.
