A fast-loading site provides a better user experience and can lead to higher search engine rankings. One effective way to improve your website’s performance is by implementing Nginx caching. o § Instructionals/Technical⠀➾ # ⚓ Beebom ☛ How_to_Set_Environment_Variables_in_Linux_(Guide) |_Beebom⠀⇛ Ever wondered how you get the same terminal experience every time you open a new terminal session in Linux? The terminal pulls the configuration file and sets the environment according to the values in the file and the environment variables. But do you know what even is an environment variable? In this article, we will discuss what environment variables are and how to set appropriate values for them in Linux. # ⚓ Make Tech Easier ☛ How_to_Boot_Multiple_Operating_Systems From_One_USB_Drive_with_Ventoy⠀⇛ When it comes to installing an operating system from scratch, users have the option to burn it onto a flash drive, then boot into it to begin the installation. However, if you decide to install a different OS, you must format the drive, then burn a new one. This process can be tedious, not to mention time-wasting. But if you use Ventoy, an open-source solution, you can instantly access several installations, even without burning or extracting them. # ⚓ ID Root ☛ How_To_Install_Notepad++_on_Debian_11⠀⇛ In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Notepad++ on Debian 11. If you are considering making the switch from Windows to Linux, you may want to temper your expectations just a tad. While Linux gaming is easier than ever—Valve’s Steam Deck runs on a version of Linux, after all—it still isn’t on par with what you can get on Windows. If you try to play any number of games, you will find that some can suffer small graphical quirks or decreased performance, while others won’t work at all. Others may require some web searches and command-line tweaking to get playable. However, once you have the basics down, you will be surprised at how many games you can get running. # ⚓ Beebom ☛ 10_Best_Linux_Distros_for_Gaming_in_2023_| Beebom⠀⇛ We have witnessed a lot of technological innovations since the inception of tech, and one of the recent improvements that’s nothing short of a marvel is gaming on Linux. If you were to ask about the status of Linux gaming, people would have laughed you off saying it’s not possible to play AAA games on Linux. But today, thanks to Valve’s Proton and Steam Deck, Linux gaming has reached unprecedented heights, and it continues to reach new milestones. Hence, if you want to start your gaming journey on Linux, here are the best Linux distros for gaming. o § Desktop Environments/WMs⠀➾ # § K Desktop Environment/KDE SC/Qt⠀➾ # ⚓ OMG! You need to configure new settings, review installed applications, and maximize the resemblance between your old and new desktops. When you switch to GNOME, this hassle increases significantly considering how unique GNOME is compared to other Linux desktops. Nonetheless, it is easy to get started with GNOME. You just need to know what things you should take care of after logging into the desktop for the first time. You might not find all these setups relevant, but in the end, they’ll help you get the best of what GNOME has to offer. * § Distributions and Operating Systems⠀➾ o § Fedora Family / IBM⠀➾ # ⚓ Silicon Angle ☛ The_power_of_Kubernetes:_IBM_works_to simplify_the_cloud_transformation_journey [Ed: IBM-sponsored puff piece and an example of media basically printing whatever it gets paid to]⠀⇛ Although the acceleration of technology has led to life-changing innovations throughout the years, complex technologies can be tricky to fully utilize, causing some organizations to rely on older technologies. Kubernetes offers efficient container management and scaling, but the technology intimidates many developers looking to implement them during their cloud transformation journeys. § Devices/Embedded⠀➾ * ⚓ IAR_updates_model-based_design_solution_to_master_complex_designs through_visualization⠀⇛ The latest update of IAR Visual State adds better cross- platform support for an improved user experience on both Windows and Linux. The state chart editor and navigator have been unified into one application with a new look and feel, and tabbed windows. This allows developers to have the same user experience on both Windows and Linux. In the latest release, IAR Visual State supports Linux Ubuntu 18 and Ubuntu 20. * ⚓ Hackster ☛ An_Ultra-Tiny_RISC-V_Emulator_Turns_the_Raspberry_Pi_Pico Into_a_Functional,_If_Slow,_Linux_PC_–_Hackster.io⠀⇛ Electronics engineering student Vlad Tomoiagă is looking to get the diminutive Raspberry Pi Pico and its RP2040 microcontroller to run a functional Linux-based operating system — by having its Arm Cortex-M0+ cores emulate a 32-bit RISC-V chip. “On power-up, the Linux image will be copied into RAM,” Tomoiagă explains of his creation. “After a few seconds, Linux kernel messages will start streaming on the console. The code had always appeared hackable to me, but I had never given it a go in practice. In fact, this is the first time I have written C++ in my life! Marcos had given me a quick guide to set up my environment and I was off to the races. It has been a lot of fun trying to get things to compile and making tests pass. And also have the chance to study how things are implemented in more detail. I wish web standards had some of the checks available in C++. Now I am well aware that C++ does not have the best reputation, but English is even more error-prone. Judge Newman’s complaint responds to that allegation by stating that “[d]uring the period (June 2021 through September 2021) when Chief Judge Moore claims that Judge Newman suffered a heart attack, Judge Newman sat on ten panels and issued at least eight (including majority, concurring, and dissenting) opinions.” Chief Judge Moore’s order, for its part, noted that Judge Newman wrote many fewer majority opinions than her colleagues over the past few years. I was so excited! I’ve only been out in the evening without first daughter two or three times in the ~2 years since she was born. I met Darrin at a camp- fire and he played my wedding. I haven’t seen him since then, and couldn’t wait to see him again. Bad communication led to no childcare. Called around to the people who love first daughter. No one wanted to change their plans. Daughter knew I felt sad, resented her some and my friends more, so refused to sleep & tantrumed for 2 hours. Cancelled with Emma then thought I could at least come late when roommate got home, so she went and pointlessly waited on me. # ⚓ Lonely⠀⇛ The last month has been mostly tough, with a few really good days. I loved digging garden beds when first daughter helped me pick out rocks. I loved watching first daughter meet a real live turkey for the first time and gobble at it. So one motivator for formulating the phrase was the dis-ease of feeling like I was regularly about to “lose my mind”. Another was that I’d had some “fundamentalist” days in my late youth, and so it wasn’t unusual for me to think in biblical tropes. And suddenly there it was: the phrase “The Zeroeth Commandment” came to mind. o § Technical⠀➾ # ⚓ OpenBSD_vi_Backwards_Search_Bug⠀⇛ The OpenBSD vi† has a bug that prevents a backwards search for “?”—but only with “extended” regular expressions enabled—as “?” is special to both the command (which uses the delimiter “?” to indicate a backwards search) and to extended regular expressions (which use the “?” to indicate that the previous portion of the expression is optional. The command “??” indicates that the previous regular expression should be used, but the command “?\?” is an error because the search delimiter parser removes the “\” which leaves a search of “?” which is an invalid extended regular expression. After sleeping on this I figured that a search of “[?]” would also work; hiding characters in character classes also sees use to e.g. prevent a grep from seeing itself in the process table—but you probably instead want to use `pgrep foo` and not `ps … | grep ‘[f]oo’`. Anyways the command “?[\?]” works; the internal “?” must be escaped to prevent the outer command delimiter search from yielding the invalid expression of “[“. # ⚓ Yretek_–_Game_report_DCC_Level_0_Funnel⠀⇛ We had a good, OSR game today. Originally, I had taken the user theme for Codeberg, tweaked and cleaned it up for my server, and then used that. But, I decided to go a little further and submitted a request to make it official. Someone then made an entirely new package and made it the official version[1]. After a little pouting, I decided that I’d rather have someone else maintain it so I can focus on other things. # ⚓ So_little_to_tell⠀⇛ I’ve neither posted here nor on my personal gemlog for ages. Here, because I’m never sure what so say, except in someone else’s comment section. There, because most of the ideas I’ve had for posts are technology oriented (even if slightly weird technology), and I don’t want to contribute to the glut of tech content in Geminispace, relative to other content. I was listening to Gordon Lightfoot the other night, and it sounded odd – like it was more or less chords and lyrics thought of “on the spot”, and then performed poorly. No *goal*. # § Announcements⠀➾ # ⚓ Introducing:_Bubble_and_Geminispace.org⠀⇛ It is a Gemini-based bulletin board system that can be summarized as a union of Station, Reddit, WordPress, and issue trackers like GitHub Issues. It has its benefits and drawbacks, and I don’t care whether you like it or not. That being said, people arguing against it sometimes show a paragraph written in regular English with the different parts of speech highlighted, to show the absurdity of syntax highlighting. I don’t believe that is a valid argument. Prose is read linearly, while code is read more chaotically. When coding, your eyes often jump across the place – and color can help you quickly find code matching the pattern you’re looking for. More generally, the distinction is between passive reading, and editing. Thus, here’s my stupid idea – what if one actually used syntax highlighting for editing prose? Colors as vibrant as often used for programming would be too distracting, but toned down ones could perhaps help you scan your work easily. Different parts of sentences would be easier to find, repetetive sentences might stand out more, etc. # ⚓ How_could_I_not_chime_in_on_a_discussion_about IDE’s?⠀⇛ I’ve used BSD ex/vi in anger myself. [...] My wife and I argued a bit because I’m constantly trying to find non-hurtful/ belittling ways to tell her I think she talks too much for my mind’s inbound capacity. What happens is my mind quickly feels as though a pot of popcorn popping, and then goes into a fugue-like state to protect itself, leading to my not remembering nearly enough of what she’s said, which invariably leadeth unto her being upset with me for “never listening to what I have to say”… and, of course, I start out listening, but basically can’t continue without possibly risking early stages of nervous breakdown…. # ⚓ IDE_Discourse⠀⇛ Regarding the current IDE-vs-text-editor discourse, not to be cute, but years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working my first programming job outside of an academic setting, I remember talking with a senior dev on my company’s kernel team. He was (and probably still is) a huge emacs evangelist. We talked about tooling. And I remember him telling me, “Use the best tools available on your platform. On Windows, that Visual Studio.” He wasn’t wrong (though it should be noted, this was in the context of C++ programming). And that was when Visual Studio was a lot more heavyweight. These days, it’s a lot more lightweight, updates are quicker, and it’s generally just a lot nicer to use. Not to mention, it’s also free. I remember having to finangle an academic license for years after I dropped out of grad school – Visual Studio wasn’t cheap in those years. Posting here for posterity. The time has come for a new way of thinking about green space. The automobile industry pushed it to the side, and made it an afterthought to fill in all the empty spaces in their massive roads. The public spaces we can enjoy nature in are relegated to areas outside the urban center, while inside the cities we are treated to small patches of manicured itchy invasive grass. Our trees (when we have them) provide little in the way of shade, and simply exist to greenwash the crushing weight of industrial capitalism and the toll it has on the people who live there. It is time to think about our ecology in a new way. # ⚓ The_primacy_of_the_metaphoric_process…⠀⇛ The primacy of the metaphoric process in the literary schools of romanticism and symbolism has been repeatedly acknowledged, but it is still insufficiently realised that it is the predominance of metonymy which underlies and actually predetermines the so-called ‘realistic’ trend, which belongs to an intermediary stage between the decline of romanticism and the rise of symbolism and is opposed to both. Following the path of contiguous relationships, the realist author metonymically digresses from the plot to the atmosphere and from the characters to the setting in space and time. He is fond of synecdochic details. # ⚓ An_introduction_to_mushroom_cultivation⠀⇛ Around here, supermarkets usually carry only very few species of fresh mushroom. A good way to get your hands on some fresh specimen of more species, is to learn about mushroom identification and foraging for them. Rockit (Rocket Operation Computing Kit) is a compact and inexpensive flight computer designed by Dan Invents from Finland for small model rockets. Among its many features, this board has an altimeter, accelerometer, and temperature sensor, all of which record data to a microSD card for post-flight analysis. Dan did a fantastic job with this board, and even included a 5V boost converter with 2A current output in order to control servos for more advanced rocketry. At the time, I took notice of Jennifer Margulis mainly because, after having co-authored a book with antivax pediatrician Dr. Paul Thomas and for a blog post that brought her to my attention entitled Medical Doctors Concerned We Are Giving America’s Children Too Many Vaccines Too Soon. It was a typical antivax assertion of the time, that vaccines were causing autism and all sorts of other health problems in children because we were giving too many of them to children at too young an age. (Of course, antivaxxers would never say how many and at what age they considered “safe.”) Her post was the “gateway” that led me to look at the sorts of antivaccine misinformation Margulis had been laying down on her website and elsewhere. After the pandemic hit (and totally predictably), Margulis pivoted effortlessly, as so many antivaxxers did, to anti-COVID-19 vaccine misinformation and grift. Of course, she has no clear expertise in medicine to speak of, as her PhD is in English, specifically 19th century American Literature, African-American Literature, and American Studies, but that hasn’t stopped her from becoming prominent in the antivaccine movement. # ⚓ Scheerpost ☛ More_People_Died_From_the_Failures_of Obamacare_Than_From_Covid-19⠀⇛ Why a better healthcare system is needed. # ⚓ US News And World Report ☛ CDC_Data:_Omicron_Subvariant XBB.1.16,_or_Arcturus,_Responsible_for_14%_of_New_COVID-19 Cases⠀⇛ The CDC this week reduced the coronavirus data it publishes after the public health emergency declaration related to the coronavirus ended. # ⚓ Recycling_workers_offer_depots_as_refuge,_colleagues_as blood_donors_in_an_earthquake⠀⇛ İstanbul’s Recycling Workers Association outlined their action plan for a potential earthquake, which involves repurposing their waste facilities into shelters and proposing their (migrant) companions as unbound strong rescuers and blood donors. # ⚓ Scheerpost ☛ Health_Insurance_Claim_Denied?_See_What Insurers_Said_Behind_the_Scenes⠀⇛ Learn how to request your health insurance claim file, which can include details about what your insurer is saying about you and your case. # ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Societal_Cost_of_‘Forever_Chemicals’ Estimated_at_Over_$17,000,000,0000⠀⇛ An upcoming report by Sweden-based organization ChemSec will detail the costs of the continued use of so-called “forever chemicals” which go overlooked by their manufacturers—the “societal” price that individuals and governments pay as the chemicals remain in the environment long after they are used in a range of products. # ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ 70+_US_Lawmakers_Demand_EPA_Boost Regulation_of_Microplastic_Pollution⠀⇛ Citing extensive research which has shown recently that microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, more than 70 U.S. House members on Friday wrote to the Environmental Protection Agency to demand stronger regulation of the microscopic particles that are used in everyday household items and have been linked to respiratory diseases and cancers. # ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Sanders,_Jayapal_Plan_Town_Hall_on Healthcare_as_Human_Right_to_Promote_Medicare_for_All_Bill⠀⇛ As Sen. In a similar way, Purdue Pharma used McKinsey to figure out how to “turbocharge” sales of OxyContin during the opioid epidemic. That custom sound could be specified as a URL path within the email. If a miscreant carefully crafted a mail with that sound path set to a remote SMB server, when Outlook fetched and processed the message, and automatically followed the path to the file server, it would hand over the user’s Net-NTLMv2 hash in an attempt to log in. This had prompted thousands of his supporters to take to the streets in a show of protest, and there were reports on social media that military installations, including GHQ, had been attacked. A police statement later claimed that 1,650 protesters were arrested in the Punjab province, a number that is unquestionably short of the reality. Mohammed Hanif, an award-winning writer and journalist based in Karachi, says the corruption accusations are part of a larger power struggle in the country, pitting the extremely popular Khan against the country’s establishment, including the military. “Elections are due, and they want to keep him out of the election race. And where screening is done by algorithms, the decision to remove content will be taken without context. [...] Within weeks of being introduced, critics of the Public Order Act have been proved right: its broad powers will enable the police to close down protests and suppress dissent. The Act builds on draconian powers included in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, which gives the police powers to close down protests because of “noise”, “unease” and the risk of “serious disruption”. Evaluating companies’ public statements, policies, service contracts, transparency reports, law enforcement guidelines, and judicial or administrative challenges to government demands for user data, each national edition assesses whether and how ISPs defend users’ privacy and protect their data. The report we are releasing today provides an overview and comparative analysis of this series of editions. It highlights achievements and gaps throughout editions’ shared criteria, looking at companies’ data protection and digital security policies, how transparent ISPs are about government data demands, whether they notify users about data requests, and whether they require a previous judicial order to hand user data to authorities. It compares the performance of regional and global companies, like Telefónica and América Móvil, in countries the project covers. The imbalances this comparison reveals is a mix of gaps in companies’ commitments and in national law, which  mirrors how weak or strong privacy safeguards are in countries’ legal frameworks. Moreover, the report describes how our partners’ studies revealed privacy issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the rise of data-sharing agreements with governments related to policies aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.   o ⚓ RIPE ☛ RIPE_NCC_Cloud_Strategy_Framework_(v2)⠀⇛ Our cloud strategy framework provides the principles and requirements for the cloud architecture of the RIPE NCC services.
