Today, in this third part (with video to come soon as well), we begin to enumerate the issues with YouTube. “Financial aspects aside, in the next part we’ll explain the connection between the financial ambitions of YouTube and why Google is lawyering up against non- profit Free software projects and volunteers/activists.”First of all, it’s not even clear if YouTube is profitable. Sure, it has revenue, but lots of expenses on top of that (including paying some “creators”, not just YouTube staff, hardware, bandwidth). We’ve done these calculations for years (in IRC mostly) and we always reach the conclusion that operational costs rise over time. We also know there’s a financial woe for YouTube; its revenue is actually decreasing while costs of storage skyrocket because the catalogue is growing and newer uploads can be very large (HD) files. Does this justify turning the site into a malicious “app” (with DRM, proprietary JavaScript, malicious ads etc.) or is it a sign that it’s time to jog on and find another place for video hosting? Financial aspects aside, in the next part we’ll explain the connection between the financial ambitions of YouTube and why Google is lawyering up against non- profit Free software projects and volunteers/activists. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 128 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2023/06/12/irc-log-110623/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2023/06/12/irc-log-110623/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 06.12.23⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ IRC_Proceedings:_Sunday,_June_11,_2023⠀✐ Posted in IRC_Logs at 4:21 am by Needs Sunlight Also available via the Gemini protocol at: * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-techrights-110623.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-110623.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-social-110623.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-techbytes-110623.gmi Over HTTP: 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇H 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇HTML5_logs⦈_ #techrights_log_as_HTML5 #boycottnovell_log_as_HTML5 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇H 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇HTML5_logs⦈_ #boycottnovell-social_log_as_HTML5 #techbytes_log_as_HTML5 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇t 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇text_logs⦈_ #techrights_log_as_text #boycottnovell_log_as_text 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇t 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇text_logs⦈_ #boycottnovell-social_log_as_text #techbytes_log_as_text Enter_the_IRC_channels_now =============================================================================== § IPFS Mirrors⠀➾ CID Description Object type IRC log for  QmdedV7DWuKU8dcHfbRxKZKWgzgWTZsiL7quGfx4JPAn22 #boycottnovell 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #boycottnovell  Qmeqj9vb2FhCppurFkiXoPFK1CyrU6d5JQ6cc4ewx4ibXH (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for #boycottnovell-  QmRMcSy951Zkz5CDvgFMaUoJbcuyfVFLb8ZYAsDJPqXZ9J social 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #boycottnovell-  QmQqy45XnFSKux22keVVkECVAHQ4uvnyEaEeMic7tiURN4 social 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ (full IRC log as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for  QmUghZ3GCrGNyW5RQEC2oV7YRx8JTHKjxrBtBADmgGX3ZU #techbytes 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #techbytes  QmUb9cz4LKPpP5qdS1gzVxgGoSv7nB1uQLvVP3LYdssLDD (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for  QmVsoSmfzZsn2tVNg5AWhqSwzeWsBDtzfQ5Z5L9rpmgKu4 #techrights 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #techrights  QmWAMuEA1oFtFtvfUtLGyiNxqHHh17Y9GNzrweXAvidUuw (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇IPFS logo⦈ § Bulletin for Yesterday⠀➾ Local_copy | CID (IPFS): QmcZbfP8dvpkTpUyJUVYKdHL6swtNo7WWN85RqPGaMHwhQ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 255 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2023/06/12/linux-foundation-tax-filing/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2023/06/12/linux-foundation-tax-filing/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 06.12.23⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ What_the_2022_Tax_Filing_(From_7_Months_Ago,_for_Tax_Year_2021)_Teaches_Us About_the_Linux_Foundation⠀✐ Posted in Deception, Free/Libre_Software, GNU/Linux, Kernel at 1:14 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz Video_download_link | md5sum 1196701c7066069493c03905ccd58f36 Reality Behind Linux Foundation Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0 http://techrights.org/videos/lf-reality-series.webm Summary: Our new_series looks into the bosses of Linus Torvalds and what actually drives their agenda, based on the structural and financial aspects T HE video above goes through the Linux_Foundation_wiki under June 2023 and then discusses what the Linux Foundation does with its money, in turn taking note of this_latest_IRS_filing. At a later point we’ll focus on events as a source of revenue, the latest new shells/offshoots, and organisational charts etc. As noted along the way in the video, Jim Zemlin has this attitude of, “I’m the boss of Linus Torvalds, hence I’m important.” Reality, however (based on facts), shows that he’s not important and despite that he somehow became the boss of Torvalds. Cui bono? The evil companies wanting to control Torvalds via Zemlin and his corrupt wife, who takes Microsoft money and defrauds loads of people. It’s “all in the family”… pretenders oppressing the world’s achievers. Does money ruin everything? The Linux Foundation isn’t what it seems anymore and its name has been misleading for years already. As shown above, there’s now a “LINUX KERNEL ORGANIZATION”, based in the address of the same overpriced office (about 6 million dollars a year as of years ago). In the next part we’ll show how the Linux Foundation makes its money. It has little to do with the kernel it is called after. Former staff is finding out and coming to grips with it. “There are things we cannot publicly state at this moment, but sooner or later it will be safe to blurt them out.”The company has meanwhile lost several more clients (the ones it openly admits losing; usually it lies about that loss or keeps it secret for a long time… for the sake of ‘morale’). Many people, including managers, are mortified to discover what went on. Some leave and some are preparing to sue (albeit the company is in hiding, so it’s not easy). Perhaps none of this should be particularly shocking. I know and I’ve seen attrition crises in the company over the years (dating back to 2011). But this one is different. This one the company cannot recover from and the fake ‘founder’ might even up in a jail cell. This is the first part of a series_that we_hope_can_become_daily in the installments sense. THE company that once upon a time sponsored the Free Software Foundation (FSF and KDE among other things) might cease to exist any day now. In the previous part (with_video) of this_mini-series we argued that, based on the hard evidence, Sirius loses staff and clients rapidly. There’s almost nobody to actually run what’s left of the company. If the company tries to recruit people, they lack the interest. We have evidence of this too. “As noted above, it’s relevant to Free software advocacy because what we have here is a former FSF sponsor basically robbing (defrauding) Free software advocates, who were exploited and subjected to “value extraction” for many years, grossly underpaid and moreover embezzled behind their backs with a pension that never existed.”Tomorrow morning we’ll release a video to explain how British police is failing to respond not only to reports of a crime but also messages from British MPs. This will lead to further escalations that generally embarrass the system and there’s room for suspicion that the “Establishment” (government) is using one hand to wash the other and in turn wash the face. This series will hopefully coincide with breakthrough in the progress sense. As noted above, it’s relevant to Free software advocacy because what we have here is a former FSF sponsor basically robbing (defrauding) Free software advocates, who were exploited and subjected to “value_extraction” for many years, grossly underpaid and moreover embezzled behind their backs with a pension that never existed. Daily Links still matter a lot as well. But we’re trying to take up the pace of blogging, which means more regularly writing news/updates on strategic topics, maybe more videos, and perhaps multi-part series that are investigatory in nature. I don't think we've had anything hugely interesting happen the last week, and the whole 6.4 release really does feel like it's going fairly smoothly. Knock wood, famous last words, you know the drill. The diffstat and the commit logs all looks fairly normal. We've got perhaps a bit more filesystem changes than usual, mostly due to some xfs fixes. But even that looks larger than it is - it's mostly due to code movement, not because of any fundamentally big changes per se. There's some architecture fixes too, but most of that is just arm64 dts files. And the bulk of things is driver updates, with gpu and networking being most noticeable. As is tradition. We have some other networking changes outside of drivers too. For people interested in the nitty-gritty details, the shortlog is appended, but nothing there looks all that interesting. Which is obviously just how I like it. The interesting stuff should happen during the merge window, and the later release candidates should be as boring as possible. If something is going wrong that creates sub-par performance, the kernel people will probably want to fix it. But (Open)ZFS On Linux is outside the kernel, so Linux kernel people have little reason to particularly help out and ZoL people may not have the capabilities to dig into the kernel NFS and disk IO stacks to understand what’s going on (it’s a bit out of scope), and even if a problem can be identified there may not be any good fix. One reason for this is that the actual code of ZFS On Linux is also mostly Solaris/Illumos code, which creates a mismatch between the kernel and ZFS (one of the areas where this is still quite visible is memory issues with ZFS’s ARC). # ⚓ Manuel Matuzovic ☛ CSS!_CSS!_CSS!⠀⇛ After the first day, I was chatting about CSS in a bar with some friends. Stephan said it’s great that browsers are shipping so many new features, but we need people to use them in real projects, share their experiences in talks and articles, and show the world what CSS is capable of. I agree because most of us still need to understand how groundbreaking some of these additions to the language are. That can only change if we’re curious and experiment, share what we’ve learned, and discuss it, but it’s not enough to rely on people like Stephanie Eckles, Ahmad Shadeed, Michelle Barker, Adam Argyle, Bramus Van Damme, Una Kravets, or Kevin Powell to do that. Especially with CSS- Tricks dying slowly*, we need more people to give CSS a stage. We also agreed that we need more people to push CSS to its limits and explore what else we can get from Grid, custom properties, :has(), container queries, etc., beyond the obvious use cases. # ⚓ Matt Rickard ☛ The_Last_Innings_of_Web_2.0⠀⇛ But interoperability has evolved. One of the first challenges is figuring out how to load the PCAP files, which is the format Bustle uses to store the DBus messages. Without implementing that first, it would be difficult to test how the diagram will look like.  The Rust pcap library was used to load the packets from the PCAP file, which contains the bytes of a DBus Message. It is nice to use, though it is missing an async API for loading files. That could be fixed in the future, but this week mainly focused on a basic diagram implementation. The bytes can then be parsed through GDBus into a GDbusMessage, which contains the information to implement the diagram. Through the parsed message, the diagram can be implemented. It uses ListView to display the rows as, aside from having a nice separation of view and model, it is more efficient because it recycles widgets, especially since PCAP files could possibly contain thousands of messages. Each row contains the elapsed time, path, destination, interface, and member of the message. * § Leftovers⠀➾ o ⚓ Scheerpost ☛ ‘There_Is_NO_Neutral_When_It_Comes_To_Supporting Your_Child’⠀⇛ By Kate Schatz / Substack Dear Reader, This installment of I Love What You’re Doing is…oh, it’s so many things, but I guess what I want you to know at the outset is that it’s important.
