More Work on Debian. Purging More Internationalization and Properly Setting Up Software Repositories. Yesterday, and this morning, I did some more work de-bloating Debian. In my_last_post_on_the_subject, I mentioned the input method editors, why they’re useless to me (as a US English user who never enters non-Latin alphabet characters), and how much RAM some of them took (over 100 MB). Well, it turned out there was more where that came from. Debian installs every Firefox and LibreOffice language pack as well as LibreOffice Help Packs in every language, and a fourth input method editor that I missed the last time called fcitx. Two versions of it, apparently. Proposing to Apt that it purge *fcitx* removed the fcitx and fcitx5 packages, a bunch of non-Latin Alphabet font packages that nothing seemed to depend on except for fcitx itself. So I did that and then an apt autoremove to be sure. Making sure along the way that it wasn’t proposing anything stupid, like removing KDE or X11, and it didn’t. That done, I went into Synaptic Package Manager where I realized there was all this Firefox and LibreOffice internationalization junk. So I ended up clearing out (purge) over 2 GB of useless (to me) help and language packs for that. Then I went through all of the installed packages and purged out the task-(non English Language) stuff and the various oddities that I missed the last time around. Roy Schestowitz says Internationalization is a “feature”. I suppose it is. Debian can’t tell who will use it, but most distributions at least have an installer that removes it from the computer after it copies over the OS image and knows where the user is and how they will use the computer. (Language, locale, etc.) Is 2 GB a lot of data (on top of what I purged out the other day when I was trying to get input method editors to quit taking 100+ MB of system RAM)? No, it’s not. Especially on compressed BtrFS. But it just “feels” bloated. I try to leave as much room as possible for MY stuff on my SSD, and this is just another “This feels rather clumsy and ham-fisted.” thing I’ve run into with Debian. Naturally, I know what I’m doing with Synaptic Package Manager and Apt autoremove and am not going to do something that proposes ruining the system. If you don’t want to tear things apart, then leave it alone or possibly look into setting up a base system and then layering it with KDE meta-packages. Then I noticed that the installer didn’t do the best job of setting up my Apt repos. It only set up “main”. Debian also has “contrib”, “non-free”, and “non-free- firmware”. So I opened /etc/apt/sources.list in nano, as an administrator, and edited each line to add contrib non-free non-free-firmware after main on each line. It ended up looking like this: 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇Debian_sources⦈_ Technically, I could strip out the commented-out top line and the blank line underneath it and the commented paragraph at the bottom, if I wanted to, but they aren’t doing anything so meh. Then I ran apt update and it told me there were updated CPU firmware files for AMD and Intel processors. The Intel one turned out to be a patch for the Downfall vulnerability, and the Debian live installer left things configured so that my firmware packages would never get updates! After the repositories were set up correctly, and the firmware was no longer being showed as “manually installed”because of lack of a repository, I proceeded to minimize the mess of packages that the Debian installer left marked as “manually installed”. This was easy. sudo apt-mark minimize-manual This proposed a long list of packages that actually got automatically installed with something else. Fixed a few dozen “manual” marks. Didn’t get everything but cleaned up the list a lot. Finally, I noticed a quirk in my system on reboots. Sometimes it takes a very long time to reboot, seemingly for no reason. The system will hang for half a minute and the only message it spits out is that the watchdog failed to respond, which turns out to be a red herring. It turned out that rebooting a PC is a complicated process and there’s_several ways_to_do_it, most of which are commented as specific problems with various models. So reboot.c in the Linux source has grown very, very long. The Linux documentation suggested that there’s, errrm, multiple ways to handle this manually if you have to. “21.1.5. Rebooting reboot=b[ios] | t[riple] | k[bd] | a[cpi] | e[fi] [, [w]arm | [c]old] bios Use the CPU reboot vector for warm reset warm Don’t set the cold reboot flag cold Set the cold reboot flag triple Force a triple fault (init) kbd Use the keyboard controller. cold reset (default) acpi Use the ACPI RESET_REG in the FADT. If ACPI is not configured or the ACPI reset does not work, the reboot path attempts the reset using the keyboard controller. efi Use efi reset_system runtime service. If EFI is not configured or the EFI reset does not work, the reboot path attempts the reset using the keyboard controller.” -Kernel documentation My guess is it defaulted to UEFI (system firmware) interfaces and that didn’t respond, so after half a minute it gave up and started banging on the keyboard controller, which is how you rebooted a PC in the 1980s. Amusingly, although the UEFI interface appears to be quite, quite broken on the Lenovo ThinkBook 15 ITL Gen2, the ACPI interface DOES work. The Linux documentation for reboot=acpi and reboot=bios or reboot=uefi says that the fallback is always give up and bang on the keyboard controller. This resets the CPU and does a cold reboot, and apparently this compatibility interface holdover from Legacy BIOS is the most “guaranteed-to-work” thing that UEFI firmware has 14 years after it became common. Adding reboot=acpi to the kernel start line consistently seems to resolve the problem and make the machine reboot right away. According to Debian’s Wiki, the done way to make this persistent after you know it fixes the problem is to add it to the /etc/grub/default file with a text editor (like nano) and then running the update-grub command as the administrative user (with sudo or as root). In my case, the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet” in /etc/default/grub ends up looking like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”reboot=acpi quiet” Apparently, it’s just yet another “broken UEFI issue”. Thanks Lenovo. It’s always so nice when these happen. Another reason to buy a System76_laptop_with_Coreboot_next_time. UEFI can’t even reliably reboot a computer 14 years later. Yet another reason why_UEFI_is_trash. It’s not like I never installed any UEFI updates from Lenovo. The first 13 updates got rolled into the UEFI flash I did before ditching Windows 10 because Linux was “ready” for this hardware. It’s just more of this “Insyde BIOS” horseshit. Always such a pleasure. Windows always seems to know exactly how to handle it because, basically, Microsoft and the BIOS vendors get together and “decide what the bugs will be”so Windows always knows what to do. Is this illegal? Certainly. But good luck ever “proving” the collusion is going on, when it obviously is. They can make sure to shake hands in seedy backroom deals so that anything else you boot on the PC runs into some trouble. Like that time I found the ACPI “bug” in a Foxconn G33 motherboard, but Windows had the “fix” in XP SP2, which shipped over 3 years prior to the first affected board. █ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢠⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⡄⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 335 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2023/09/09/follow-the-media-money/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2023/09/09/follow-the-media-money/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 09.09.23⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ The_Media_Does_an_Intentionally_Bad_Job_Covering_Microsoft_and_Bill_Gates Scandals_(Follow_the_Money)⠀✐ Posted in Bill_Gates, Microsoft at 11:08 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz Video_download_link | md5sum 3c66a82ccfad6ad5997f5e6c050cf20e Distracting From Microsoft Scandals Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0 http://techrights.org/videos/microsoft-bent-media.webm Summary: What’s left of the media does an awful job covering technology topics; heck, a lot of what’s left takes bribes from Microsoft (even admitting that out in the open), so bias seems to be the last remaining business model TODAY’S video is longer than usual because it covers a lot of ground, ranging from deliberate distortion of narratives by Microsoft-sponsored media (e.g. [1, 2]) to outright sinister lies. What we see is yet more Microsoft propaganda looking to distract from Azure getting totally cracked, citing Microsoft like the hero and the champion of security. The way we see it, this is an attempt to distract from Microsoft allowing anybody out there to crack Azure. The same happened in high-profile universities lately. “The way we see it, this is an attempt to distract from Microsoft allowing anybody out there to crack Azure.”“Lots of schools,” as one reader pit it, “from college to K-12 are getting hit by the real TCO of Windows, but the media is complicit in hiding that and misdirecting the blame.” In addition to that I speak about how the media helps Microsoft attack both copyleft and copyright (only where it suits Microsoft), both with textual content and code. And while Bill Gates pollutes the planet like no other person (same for Microsoft and Windows, which contribute a lot to waste and energy consumption) he’s hailed as a flag bearer. “The video above covers about 10 different aspects of the media deception.”The media is failing to explain very simple things in very simple ways. It’s not even media, it’s more like Microsoft propaganda and while Microsoft’s go-to decoy (“HEY HI”) crashes and burns all we get is this “clickbait title,” as a reader put it, “used to cover for plagiarism and try to make the latter acceptable.” The video above covers about 10 different aspects of the media deception. There’s much more that could be covered, but this will do for this weekend. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 403 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2023/09/09/irc-log-080923/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2023/09/09/irc-log-080923/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 09.09.23⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ IRC_Proceedings:_Friday,_September_08,_2023⠀✐ Posted in IRC_Logs at 2:43 am by Needs Sunlight Also available via the Gemini protocol at: * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-techrights-080923.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-080923.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-social-080923.gmi * gemini://gemini.techrights.org/irc-gmi/irc-log-techbytes-080923.gmi Over HTTP: 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇H 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇HTML5_logs⦈_ #techrights_log_as_HTML5 #boycottnovell_log_as_HTML5 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇H 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇HTML5_logs⦈_ #boycottnovell-social_log_as_HTML5 #techbytes_log_as_HTML5 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇t 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇text_logs⦈_ #techrights_log_as_text #boycottnovell_log_as_text 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇t 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇text_logs⦈_ #boycottnovell-social_log_as_text #techbytes_log_as_text Enter_the_IRC_channels_now =============================================================================== § IPFS Mirrors⠀➾ CID Description Object type IRC log for  QmWSQz3u2cw7tM6VnRmJ3Vj87gQW73X5YukwRFDmp3fYAM #boycottnovell 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #boycottnovell  QmNvQcx8fFvaWcWyYCo1e3He2q6mWmH4DPrmpESKr8PTt7 (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for #boycottnovell-  Qma6HtdMfqZTd3uQXLAfUiUC2WEtwTzmxi9cadPBazdAY5 social 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #boycottnovell-  QmQCfnkKS8yjJVuVqu9mWxWegXsvLLmkFZM7kwFFEhY2Pa social 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ (full IRC log as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for  QmccTCM3UTFtAScfH28gTSr2j4GKS8wxp3n92p3xJoBrHr #techbytes 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #techbytes  Qma1UH3Ybvpsu2KdQSbhLSTgy9JsoLjdR43oJot3Xo5EE3 (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) IRC log for  Qma6JSAUiZJzzFtPDKkFnZtdo5WcER2aevj8XeodmzYZrR #techrights 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇HTML5 logs⦈ (full IRC log as HTML) IRC log for #techrights  QmSpazQ7wCPqgYpE4VcUuaLmR4tVaSr51gtAATRfWmsz5U (full IRC log 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇text logs⦈ as plain/ASCII text) 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇IPFS logo⦈ § Bulletin for Yesterday⠀➾ Local_copy | CID (IPFS): QmXZcp3rXLYa24pYd7jUu6sPDrhziRCNCok875WLJTLysP ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 530 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2023/09/09/ubuntu-tpm-disk-encryption/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2023/09/09/ubuntu-tpm-disk-encryption/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 09.09.23⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ Ubuntu_TPM_Disk_Encryption_Requires_Snaps⠀✐ Posted in DRM, Ubuntu at 1:26 am by Guest Editorial Team Reprinted with permission from Ryan_Farmer. Ubuntu Plans Really Awful TPM Disk Encryption Which_Requires_Snaps. I personally would not depend on this for any sort of a production system. There’s a short list of reason why I have no confidence in it. TPMs are incredibly flaky and easy to piss off. Updating your UEFI firmware can make TPMs refuse_to_decrypt_Bitlocker_volumes on_Windows. (Even just changing one setting in the firmware can do it. It got Matthew Garrett, who implemented Microsoft Security_Theater Boot on Linux, when he attempted to enable the Third Party Certificate so that Linux could even run on a Lenovo laptop.) Why would this situation be any different on Linux? When this happens, say goodbye to all the data on your disk. I lost an entire Bitlocker volume when I flash updated new Lenovo firmware for this computer. Fortunately, I didn’t have anything important on it and was just updating the firmware as the last thing I did under Windows before removing Windows and installing Linux. It will require Snaps. Snaps are an awful package format. They’re an Ubuntu-ism and they’ve been used to spread malware to Ubuntu users through the Snap store. The Snaps claim to be universal Linux packages, but when I attempted to run GZDoom on Kubuntu, which is just KDE desktop on Ubuntu, it failed and said I had to use GNOME. Very universal, you see. Can’t even deal with a different desktop environment on Ubuntu. I’m sure they work terrifically on other distributions entirely! Ubuntu does not have a good record at designing things. Their software and implementations usually end up having all sorts of bugs in them. Their support for OpenZFS is entirely against both the CDDL and GPL licenses, and relies on an out-of-tree file system module that nobody maintaining the upstream kernel supports or will guarantee won’t break. So if you enable TPM disk encryption on Ubuntu you will have a flaky TPM-backed encryption atop a flaky illegal out-of-tree kernel module with no upstream support, from “engineers” that have never designed anything else in such a way as to give me any impression that they know what they’re doing. Your best bet with encryption is to not trust the TPM, or Ubuntu. You should set it up the officially supported way (LUKS or dm-crypt with a decryption passphrase) and leave the TPM out of it. (Previously, Ubuntu has offered ecryptfs for /home, but this is not as safe as whole disk encryption, and it also benchmarks worse than encrypting the entire disk.) You should also do so on an official Linux file system, to further avoid the likelihood of a corrupt file system. And I would say, don’t even use Ubuntu to begin with. For a long time, they said the entire system was going to go Snaps instead of Debian packages. That was over a decade ago. They packaged the GNOME calculator and a few other things as Snaps, and the only thing that did for the users was give them poorly-maintained Snaps from the previous release of GNOME that started up much more slowly and took more resources. (Software bloat.) Eventually they gave up. Ubuntu has already had a checkered past packaging GNOME anyway, and has shipped version mismatched “FrankenGNOMEs” with lots of buggy patches. Now they’re back and claim they’ll do the base system as Snaps and that if they get anything wrong it will screw up your encrypted volume that only the TPM can unlock, if it feels like it. Also, the TPM is designed not to tell the user how it actually works, so the user can’t know that their disk encryption is safe from backdoors. This is just yet another, frankly disgusting, thing that Canonical is unleashing, and I think it’s basically another Windows-ism. The biggest thing is a medical issue that Bunny has been going through. It’s not life threatening, but it is life changing for the both of us, and the doctors are still trying to figure out what happened in late April that caused the issue. I’ve also been forced to deal with the medical-industrial complex and the bureaucracy surrounding it (Bunny used to deal with the medical-industrial complex, having been a former Fed herself and can stomach the bureaucracy) and while I have plenty to say about it, I’ll refrain least I work myself up. Another issue has been that my primary development system (a Linux system) has been offline for the past few months. The single biggest influence on how I describe a room is when I was little and me and grandma would go down into the cellar under her workplace where she kept a case of soda by the door and we never ventured very far in there but the light didn’t reach the other sides of the room is how big and dark it was. # ⚓ things_that_happened⠀⇛ So a lot of things happened not in the order I had thought: I got married about four years ago in the municipal office of Adachi, then I had a wedding with no attendees last year, my baby was born this spring and my family came for the second time to visit me and meet my in-laws. After scrubbing the contacts with isopropyl alcohol, I began sullenly reassembling the whole machine. I was very anxious, if I hadn’t destroyed it outright with my shitty recapping job or my disassembly of the analog components, I was doubtful it would do anything other than show that checkerboard. Despite my lack of hope, plugging it in and flipping the switch was the most stressful things I’ve done in recent memory, far ahead of like, last semester’s finals or anything. # § Internet/Gemini⠀➾ # ⚓ Project_Gemini_has_officially_moved_to geminiprotocol.net⠀⇛ As of the posting of this announcement, the new geminiprotocol.net domain is the official home of Project Gemini. One is the choice of which desktop environment to use. For me, Xfce is my desktop environment of choice. One of those reasons I prefer Xfce is because of Thunar, the file manager for Xfce. It’s not flashy. It lets me get my file tasks done with a minimum of fuss. But what I like most of all is how easy it is to add custom actions to Thunar to create various custom tools to perform bulk file operations (which I do quite frequently). I have several custom actions that I use frequently with the production of The PCLinuxOS Magazine, and they are REAL timesavers. Those Thunar Custom Actions can be one-liners, or can invoke a custom bash script. I have custom actions that use both methods. Obviously, more complex actions require the use of a custom bash script, but there are quite a few one-liners that wield a LOT of power. Typically, my one-liners and my custom bash scripts run command line programs on either a single file, or on a group of files. # ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Linux_Fu:_Build_A_Better_Ls⠀⇛ Ask someone to name all the things they can find in a room. This exploits a gap between TLS and HTTP as implemented by CDNs. His research found ways to identify endpoints at scale, even when Azure, Cloudflare, and Google clamp down on domain fronting on their infrastructure. Domain fronting is an important tool used by Tor to circumvent censorship in places that block encrypted SNI. This talk summary is part of my DEF CON 31 series. It only has columns, which you could choose to arrange side-by-side, but that’s a feeble human thing and irrelevant to this primordial protocol. In writing this I had to choose between complex code and simple data, or simple data and complex code. Given that updates consist of adding an entry to the end of each column, I chose simple code. That digital footprint left on the beach will be washed away, and I won’t be able to enjoy that music as easily. The [Internet] culture surrounding streaming doesn’t just affect the music industry; everything from movies and TV shows to video games are slowly falling into the clutches of media giants. Music streaming overtook digital music sales—which itself overtook physical sales—for the first time in 2016. And 78% of American households subscribe to streaming services. But based on my experiences it is not. The biggest problem we have (not only) in IT these days is a lack of effectiveness. And what do we do to solve this problem? We attempt to improve our efficiency – amplifying our problems instead of solving any of them. I mentioned this issue several times in previous posts, usually in the context of other topics. Shawndre Delmore had been incarcerated pretrial for five months before he was found unresponsive in a cell on August 31. Delmore’s family is demanding answers as to why a previously healthy 24-year-old would so suddenly suffer from cardiac arrest, and is calling for an immediate independent investigation into conditions at the jail, which is already under federal investigation. “This is systemic. This is not a one-off,” says the family’s attorney Mawuli Mel Davis, whose firm represents three other families with relatives that have died at the jail in the past two years. In 2022, Fulton County Jail recorded 15 in-custody deaths, including that of Lashawn Thompson, a 35-year-old Black man who was “eaten alive” by insects and bedbugs in his cell. We also speak to Davis about another client, the family of Johnny Hollman Sr., a 62-year-old Black grandfather and church deacon who died after a traffic stop in August, and about the Republican Georgia attorney general’s sweeping indictment of 61 Cop City protesters on RICO charges. “This is fascism,” warns Davis. “This is an attempt to have a chilling effect on people who are organizing against police violence.” o ⚓ Techdirt ☛ G/O_Media_Gives_Another_Crash_Course_On_Perils_Of Replacing_Human_Journalists_With_Half-Baked_‘AI’⠀⇛ While recent evolutions in “AI” have netted some profoundly interesting advancements in creativity and productivity, its early implementation in journalism has been a sloppy mess thanks to some decidedly human-based problems: namely greed, incompetence, and laziness. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Cerabyte:_One_Terabyte_Per_Square_Centimeter⠀⇛ Most of us will at one point have run out of storage and either had to buy a larger driver or delete some of those precious files. This ballot initiative, known as “Measure 110,” went into effect in early 2021. It reclassified personal drug possession from a misdemeanor to a lower-level violation and set up a “Drug Treatment and Recovery Services Fund” to create new addiction recovery centers. The ruling is part of a wave of reproductive rights wins in the region, as Mexico now joins Argentina and Colombia in decriminalizing or legalizing abortion since 2020. “Latin America is actually leading the conversation on the protection of reproductive rights,” says our guest Cristina Rosero, who worked on the lawsuit that decriminalized abortion in Colombia last year. Meanwhile, Mexico is on track to elect its first woman president, as its two major political parties have both named women candidates for next year’s presidential election. This figure is based on various scenarios describing how anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions may develop in the future. So in the best case, if we manage to curb emissions quickly and radically, we can still meet the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. o ⚓ Omicron Limited ☛ World_falling_dangerously_short_of_climate goals:_UN⠀⇛ “The world is not on track to meet the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement,” including capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above mid-19th century levels, the report said. o ⚓ New Yorker ☛ Will_the_Rains_Extinguish_Burning_Man?⠀⇛ As those road-blockaders saw, Burning Man is not only a victim of environmental change but also a perpetrator of it. A friend—the one engaged to the ultramarathoner—recently described the festival as “the ultimate expression of a capitalist economy that throws off so much surplus wealth” that “tens of thousands of people can gather to create self-destructing artifacts.” In 2019, when the Burning Man Project last sought to renew its permit with the Bureau of Land Management, it faced environmental-impact requirements that it argued “would forever negatively change the fabric of the Burning Man event, if not outright kill it.” (At least some of the requirements were dropped, and the permit was renewed.) o ⚓ Breach Media ☛ Mining_companies_are_abusing_a_little-known loophole_to_avoid_cleanup⠀⇛ According to a number of academic researchers and environmental organizations across Canada, this status is a gaping loophole by which mining companies maximize profits and avoid reclamation costs, foisting billions of dollars of liabilities onto the public. The Breach spoke to academics, campaigners and regulators to expose for the first time how companies are abusing this loophole—and how it can be fixed. o ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Urgent_Call_to_Phase_Out_Fossil_Fuels_Ahead_of G20_Summit⠀⇛ “Global leaders must do more than talk. They must act. To make a livable future possible, President Biden and fellow G20 leaders must commit to a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels and an ambitious commitment to a just renewable energy transition. They must stop promoting dangerous distractions like Carbon Capture and Storage that benefit no one but the fossil fuel industry. They must end public finance for fossil fuels and shift this to renewable energy. Agreeing to this now will provide momentum for commitments to be made at the UN Climate Negotiations in Dubai later this year. The global pressure is building, exemplified by marches around the world culminating in a March to End Fossil Fuels in NYC September 17th, where thousands will gather to demand Biden phase out fossil fuels and declare a climate emergency. It’s time for world leaders to step up and lead the way towards a just and thriving future.” o § Overpopulation⠀➾ # ⚓ Science Alert ☛ China’s_Qing_Dynasty_Collapsed_For_Reasons That_Feel_Eerily_Familiar⠀⇛ “We argue that the four-fold population explosion peaking in the 19th century, the growing competition for a stagnant number of elite positions, and increasing state fiscal stress combined to produce an increasingly disgruntled populace and elite, leading to significant internal rebellions,” write the researchers in their published paper. Population growth led to overcrowding, poverty, and an overflow of qualified bureaucrats unable to rise up the ranks, the researchers say. The cost of keeping order, adding to burdens associated with depleting silver reserves and opium imports, exacerbated the problems even further. * § Finance⠀➾ o ⚓ Financial Post ☛ Successive_governments_have_taken_Canada’s economic_security_for_granted,_businesses_say⠀⇛ It may seem on first blush that Canada has taken a number of steps to protect its businesses in the past few years, given it has restricted Chinese companies from investing in this country’s critical minerals sector and introduced cybersecurity bills to protect critical infrastructure. * § AstroTurf/Lobbying/Politics⠀➾ o ⚓ Gizmodo ☛ What_You_Need_to_Know_About_the_New_FCC_Commissioner⠀⇛ Though this is Gomez’s first sting as commissioner, she knows her way around the building. The first-of-its-kind legislation was signed into law a year ago by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In a lawsuit filed Friday against state Attorney General Robert Bonta, X Corp. challenges the “constitutionality and legal validity” of the law, saying it violates the First Amendment. o ⚓ Hindustan Times ☛ Elon_Musk’s_X_sues_California_over_content moderation_law⠀⇛ Assembly bill 587 requires social media platforms to post their content moderation policies — which they already do — and twice a year submit a report to the state on how they address hate speech, racism, misinformation, foreign political interference and other issues. The law, “compels companies to engage in speech against their will, impermissibly interferes with the constitutionally-protected editorial judgments of companies such as X Corp.” and has pressures companies to remove or demonetize “constitutionally-protected speech,” says the lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District Court of California. o ⚓ Pro Publica ☛ He_Fled_a_Traffic_Stop_in_Louisiana._Now_He’s_in Prison_for_Life.⠀⇛ Markus Lanieux thought his prayers had been answered when, in the summer of 2021, his attorney informed him that she had struck a tentative deal with the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office that would secure his freedom after 12 years in prison. But, as I’ve noted repeatedly, I’m happy to highlight when he does the right thing, such as here where he is (perhaps surprisingly) challenging a terrible internet law that the bigger internet companies refuse to challenge (because it helps them), and bringing in a big time 1st Amendment lawyer to do so. And, importantly, the challenge seems really well done. o ⚓ EFF ☛ EFF_Urges_Appeals_Court_to_Re-hear_Case_over_Trump’s_X Account⠀⇛ The amicus brief filed Friday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit supports X’s request for an en banc rehearing by all of the circuit’s judges; a three-judge panel ruled against X in July and its decision was unsealed in August.  Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed and got a search warrant for the data from the former president’s X account, and both a trial judge and the appeals court ordered Twitter to comply. But the Justice Department also got a nondisclosure order to prevent X from discussing the existence or contents of the search warrant with anyone, including Trump.   That’s a prior restraint of speech, and the July ruling that upheld it made two critical mistakes. First, the three-judge panel wrote that the judicial review standard of “strict scrutiny” applied, requiring a finding that the government acted to further a compelling governmental interest, and that the action was narrowly tailored to achieve that interest. But instead of taking the Supreme Court’s admonition that prior restraint scrutiny is “the most exacting” First Amendment test, the panel claimed X’s speech on information “obtained only by virtue of its involvement in the government’s investigation” was not entitled to that highest level of protection.    * § Freedom of Information / Freedom of the Press⠀➾ o ⚓ CPJ ☛ 2023-09-08_[Older]_Media_briefing:_Journalism_is_not_a crime:_The_wrongful_detention_of_Evan_Gershkovich_and_Russia’s chilling_assault_on_the_press⠀⇛ o ⚓ CPJ ☛ 2023-09-08_[Older]_Russia_labels_3_more_journalists_– including_Nobel_laureate_Dmitry_Muratov_–_as_‘foreign_agents’⠀⇛ o ⚓ US News And World Report ☛ 2023-09-02_[Older]_Russia_Labels Nobel-Winning_Journalist_‘Foreign_Agent’⠀⇛ o ⚓ CPJ ☛ Russia_labels_3_more_journalists_–_including_Nobel_laureate Dmitry_Muratov_–_as_‘foreign_agents’⠀⇛ On September 1, the Russian Ministry of Justice added three journalists—including Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov—to its list of so-called “foreign agents,” accusing them of helping create and distribute “messages and materials” from foreign agents “to an unlimited number of people.” In addition to Muratov, the Russia-based editor-in-chief of independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta who was awarded the 2021 Nobel peace prize, the list included Denis Kataev, a journalist with exiled broadcaster Dozhd TV (TV Rain) and French broadcaster Radio France; and Ksenia Larina, a journalist with investigative outlet The Insider. The crime of persecution is the intentional and severe deprivation of fundamental rights contrary to international law by reason of the identity of the group based on grounds international law recognizes as impermissible. Persecution committed against people because of sex characteristics, or the social constructs and criteria used to define gender, amounts to gender persecution. o ⚓ The Atlantic ☛ The_Man_Who_Became_Uncle_Tom⠀⇛ Proslavery newspaper columnists and southern planters had responded to the huge success of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by accusing Stowe of hyperbole and outright falsehood. Benevolent masters, they said, took great care of the enslaved people who worked for them; in some cases, they treated them like family. The violent, inhumane conditions Stowe described, they contended, were fictitious. By naming her sources, and outlining how they had influenced her story, Stowe hoped to prove that her novel was rooted in fact. A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin was an immediate success; its publisher reported selling 90,000 copies by the end of 1854. Abraham Lincoln himself may have read the book, at a crucial turning point in the Civil War: Records indicate that the 16th president checked it out from the Library of Congress on June 16, 1862, and returned it on July 29. Those 43 days correspond with the period during which Lincoln drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. o ⚓ Pro Publica ☛ “Silver_Dollar_Road”_Director_Raoul_Peck_Discusses New_Documentary⠀⇛ In 2019, I wrote a story for ProPublica, co-published with The New Yorker, about the dispossession of Black landowners in the South. The story looked at the legal obstacles that families face when they pass their land down without a will, a form of ownership known as heirs’ property. Laws and loopholes allow speculators and developers, among others, to acquire the property out from under families, often at below-market rates. Black Americans lost 90% of their farmland between 1910 and 1997, and the heirs’ property system is one of the primary causes. I focused on the Reels family of North Carolina, chronicling how they had lost their land to developers but refused to leave it. This land was their home, their freedom, their livelihood, their history and their legacy. They believed so deeply in their moral claim to the land that they would not accept a ruling that it no longer belonged to them. Their story of losing heirs’ property is common in the South, but their determination to protest was unlike anything I had seen. Two of the brothers, Melvin Davis and Licurtis Reels, ended up spending eight years in a county jail for refusing to obey a court order to stay off the land. Their sister, Mamie Reels, and their niece, Kim Duhon, dedicated their lives to protecting the property and freeing Melvin and Licurtis. o ⚓ Techdirt ☛ Judge_Blocks_Prosecutor_From_Using_Unconstitutional Anti-Drag_Law_To_Arrest_People_During_Pride_Festival⠀⇛ It’s great to see hateful people being shut down by little things like, you know, the Constitution. The department reduced its plan from building 10,000 miles of fiber to 8,300 miles. In many cases, this entirely cuts off many communities with the greatest need for access.  These uninformed cuts to critical infrastructure will drastically raise the cost of building high-speed, high-capacity internet networks in unserved and underserved neighborhoods. It also jeopardizes the funds these communities need to build these networks. These changes run counter to the purpose of S.B. 156 and all efforts to close the digital divide. What is the middle mile? To understand, it helps to think of broadband infrastructure like a public road system. Local streets connect residential areas to the main streets and highways. These main streets and highways, built for higher speeds and capacity, connect people, goods, and services to one another over long distances. In broadband, those main streets and highways are what is considered the “middle mile.” The local roads connecting to each individual home and business are the “last mile.” * § Monopolies⠀➾ o ⚓ TechTarget ☛ Google_antitrust_case_could_explore_unknown threats⠀⇛ In 1998, Microsoft’s antitrust defense claimed that the tech industry’s dynamism prevented monopoly control.
